In language arts, we had a project to do a talk about what we are passionate about. I started my project wanting to do my talk on dance. But then I changed it to mental health and how to help it. My whole family has experiences with their mental health so this topic is really important to me.
I started my talk out by explaining how this was important to me and a few fun facts about mental health. After that I started talking about different types of mental disorders and elaborating on each. I talked about Depression (mood disorders), anxiety, personality disorders, psychotic (schizophrenia), eating disorders, trauma related disorders, and abusive disorders.
After that, I talked about what causes these problems, and finally I talked about how to help these problems.
While organizing my TED-like talk, I needed to research more about mental health because even though I’m passionate about mental health, I needed to know a lot more. I have nearly a whole page of notes. While researching, I found lots of interesting things. For example, If you ever need to call 911 but can’t speak, call 55 and they will track your location.
The whole time I was talking I felt like barfing. I am a huge procrastinator so I didn’t really start to care about it until others started to present. Even then, I had a dance show coming up so I had to practice 5 hours a day, 5 days a week until the show. So in the last few days, I crammed it all in. So of course I was really nervous. I also didn’t know where to look. It was awkward to look people in the eye when I talk so I usually looked at my notes or at the roof.
I think this was a very interesting experience. I would probably not do it again because I don’t like to talk in front of others but the creation was really fun. Thank you!
I thought it was really brave of you to do your project on mental health and even come up and talk about your own mental health problems.
